Why are Essential Oils so potent and effective?

Creation

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was lightAnd God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

And God said, 'Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.' And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

And God said, 'Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.' And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

And God said, 'Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.' And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

And God said, 'Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.' And it was so. And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day" (Genesis 1:1-19).

Photosynthesis

Growth is a complicated process, and requires a lot of energy. All living things grow, and thus all living things need energy for growth. So how do plants get the energy they need for growth? They harness it from sunlight in a process known as photosynthesis. Plants cannot grow or survive without photosynthesis. Plant growth, and certainly plant survival, may occur without photosynthesis, over very short periods, with root reserves from photosynthesis. However, without photosynthesis, a plant will not grow and will eventually die.

"What is the point?" you might ask.

I find it interesting that God made it nearly impossible for a plant to survive and grow without the power of the sun, and yet, He chose to create vegetation on the third day and did not create the sun until the fourth day. A possible reason, if I could add a human hypothesis, might be because He knew that nations would one day worship the sun because of its power. He may have ascribed the sun its proper place as something created and not necessary above the power of its Creator.

But, photosynthesis had to have occurred on the third day, because, on the sixth day, after God created Adam and Eve, He presented, for their sustenance, mature trees, bearing fruit, along with all the other vegetation. The fact is: there was light established on the first day, and whatever that light was, it was separating day (light) from night (darkness) without sun, moon, planets, or stars. Genesis 1:17-18 tells us that God used the placement of the sun, moon, planets, and stars to separate the day from night. So, whatever light was established on the first day, it was this light that made the first impression on the plant life of this planet before the job was delegated to the sun. What was that light? The earth was already in a rotation process with something, at least two things like the sun and the moon, to cause day and night before they were permanently separated by the planetary systems on the fourth day. What caused this quasi-planetary rotation prior to the fourth day?

In my imagination, this is what I see: I believe that Father God was speaking the world into existence THROUGH the Lord God, His Son Jesus. For we know that everything was made THROUGH Him...

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:1-5).

"And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever" (Revelation 22:5).

So we have Jesus, like the sun, shining on the vegetation, while the Holy Spirit, like the moon, was rotating or "hovering," and casting His shadow, causing day and night until the fourth day.

I believe that everything created, in spite of the curse, has maintained the power ascribed to it since the beginning.

I believe that the light of Jesus shone on the vegetation, giving each plant its purpose and life-giving power, before the sun took its delegated place of sustaining the process that the Lord began.

I believe that there is power for physical, emotional, and spiritual healing in essential oils. It is the reason God ordained a specific recipe of oils to anoint the components of the tabernacle and the priests of God (Exodus 30). It is why the Psalmist used the analogy of God anointing his head with oil so that his cup ran over (Psalm 23). It is why God, through the Apostle James, said if we were sick, to call for the elders of the church to anoint us with oil and to pray for our healing (James 5). It is one of the reasons why Jesus said that wherever the gospel is preached, a certain woman's story would be told, because of the pure oil of Nard she poured over his head (Mark 14:3)

  • just before He would be betrayed by a friend,

  • just before He would agonize in prayer to the point of sweating blood in Gethsemane,

  • just before He would suffer cruel abuse while on trial,

  • and just before He would suffer and die on a cross.

Nard, by the way, is a flowering plant of the Valerian family and was used, not only for burial preparation, but for anxiety. "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:15).

Essential Oil: It's one of God's many provisions. At the WAYStation, we include anointing with pure, healthy oils and prayer for healing!
